Los números ordinales sirven para indicar el orden de algo o alguien.

ABREVIACIÓN DE LOS NÚMEROS ORDINALES

Como se pudo mostrar anteriormente los números ordinales en inglés se pueden  abreviar usando el número seguido de las dos últimas letras del mismo.

First- 1^st

Second-2^nd

Third- 3^rd

Fourth- 4^th     

…

**ANOTE: como muchos adjetivos, los números ordinales no tienen género (masculino, femenino) ni número (singular, plural).

AÑADIENDO -TH

Los números ordinales se forman añadiendo -th a los números ordinales.

Seventh, fourth a excepción de first, second, third, fifth, ninth, twelfth.

Algunos números como  por ejemplo eighth solamente tenemos que añadir una h, ya que el número cardinal  termina en t.

Eight- Eighth

Convendría fijarse en los cambios que se producen en algunos números ordinales cuando se añade la th al número cardinal.

Twenty-twentieth

Thirty-thirtieth

Forty-fortieth

…..

En estos ejemplos la y cambia a i y se añade –eth.

NÚMEROS COMPUESTOS

También se forman diferente los números compuestos de éstos.

Twenty-one      → Twenty-first

Twenty- two    → Twenty-second

Twenty-three   → Twenty-third

……

NÚMEROS CARDINALES Y ORDINALES JUNTOS

Cuando hay un número cardinal y ordinal juntos siempre se coloca el ordinal delante.

The first two years were terrible.
Los dos primeros años fueron terribles.

Los números ordinales en inglés se utilizan para expresar los días del mes.

Christmas is on December the 25^th.
La Navidad es el 25 de diciembre.

**ANOTE: en inglés se usa la preposición on delante del número ordinal y del mes.
